Over the next 11 years they had 6 sons and and 2 daughters, some time after 1802 the family left the village of Crowfield. John was buried at Helmingham ,Suffolk.

General Notes: Ancestor of Keith Holden:By Keith Holden: James Holden was born at Crowfield, Suffolk, England 1 January 1795. He was the fourth child born to John Holden and Susan (Smith) Holden. He was publicly baptised at the parish church of Crowfield 18 January 1795. When James was a young man he worked in the Thelnetham district of Suffolk where he met his future bride, Lydia Kerry of Wattisfield. James and Lydia were married in the parish church at Thelnetham 8 May 1815 witnessed by John Kerry an dJohn Darkin. Lydia belonged to the Independent Church a tWattisfield. She was born at Wattisfield 17 April 1793 t oThomas Kerry and his wife Mary English. Lydia was baptize don the 26 June 1793 in the Independent Church. James an dLydia baptised six of their 8 children in that church.James was an agricultural labourer (farm hand) and was very poor. He became ill in 1827 and the family decided to move to Bressingham, Norfolk to see if they could find work. Someone in Thelnetham wrote a letter to the parish of Bressingham asking for financial help and explaining why the Holden family had missed a meeting to discuss their situation. Quote, "Thelnetham 20 July 1827, Gentlemen, in consequence of the illness of Holden, his wife can not attend your meeting tomorrow - they will be very thankful for what you please to send. I can apprise you they stand very much in need." Unquote. They were eventually settled in a cottage owned by Mr. John Thwaits and for over 11years James receive da parish allotment of about 1 shilling and 10 pence per week. In 1847 he began to pay rent for his cottage and garden at the rate of about 2 shillings and 19 pense per month .On 19 March 1836 the parish authorized the expenditure o f6 shillings for clothing for his second daughter Sarah .(Sarah Holden died 30 April 1837) They continued to pay rent from 1847 to 1858 when the parish record closed. The last child born to James and Lydia Holden was born at Bressingham, Norfolk, 9 June 1833, she was christened Eliza Holden.

Aunt Rose was born in1866 and the youngest child , she died in Rattlesden in the early 1950's and is buried at Wetherden Chapel. She is the great Aunt I saw most of all and really know comparatively little about.She married Harry Bannister who was younger than her and there were no children. The family always queried why she married him and thought she was afraid of being left on the shelf. He was a dealer and tenant farmer,a very uncouth man .He was a strict Baptist Harry was born at "Little London "Wetherden in 1879 and his father is given as an agricultural labourer I always thought Harry farmed Little London but perhaps that was in later years, I may be wrong.They farmed Town Farm Stonham, Gelham Hall Wickham Market for Mrs Stanford,and Mutton Hall Wetherden for Mrs Mothersole. I don't remember them at Gelham but they were at Mutto nHall in the 1920's where I remember them until about th eage of five, I suppose about 1933 and I imagine the bad farming years made them give up. They were living at Rattlesden before the war in a cottage opposite what was then th eshop and immediately adjacent the churchyard walk. He owned a row of three cottages

A son Arthur Ernest was born in 1883 and a daughter Emma Elizabeth in 1884. George was a horseman earning 12/ -a week and lived in a tied cottage across a field from th eNorwich Road When Emma was born on 15th January he had t ofetch the doctor from Needham Market and the snow was u pto the horse's tummy. The wage was not enough for Georg ewith two young babies so he went to Ipswich and joined th ePolice Force, where he was number nineteen. The year wa s1886. Then he was paid a guinea a week, had a boot allowance, rent allowance and uniform. The family first lived i nAnn Street and the children went to Bramford Road School ,now the Record Office. They moved to 127 Wherstead Road Stoke sometime before 1899 when another daughter was born. This was Ethel Ida born on the 1st of November;
In 1906/07 the family moved to 117 Wherstead Road and thi swas known as the Police Station This was when George became Sergeant and his son Arthur, who had worked as a gardener for the Paul family of Wherstead, joined the Borough Force and took his father's number 19.George retired from the Police in 1919. In 1923 Emma, his wife died from cancerAbout 1926 George married Harriet Mary Chandler, a widow, at St Mary at Stoke church. They lived at 163 Wherstead Road until she died in 1935 and he in1936.
Christmas, my grandfathers nephew, turned up at my grandfather's funeral. It was quite a big affairas the Ipswich Borough Police formed a Guard of Honou r . Istayed at the house where grandfather lived with Uncle Arthur and Emma my aunt. Someone came to the door, a big,quite corpulent gent, who said to Auntie" I'm Christmas" she was a little taken aback and felt like saying "and I'm good Friday" but luckily refrained in time realising that it was one of her uncle John's sons. Christmas had several children. There may be one of them in Stowupland today.

He worked on farm sfrom the age of 12 and became the chauffeur for Mr. P Blofield where he remained for 33 years. William married Eliza Edwards and they had 5 children. They were married for 52 years and 6 months, until Eliza passed away in 1931. William and Eliza are buried in the new church cemetery at Banham, Norfolk. William Holden died 22 March 1936 and was buried at the cemetery vice cecetry in Banham, Norfolk. The funeral of Mr. William Holden, age 76 years, took place at the Banham church last Friday at 3 o'clock. The service wa sconducted by Canon R.W. Longley (Rector), and Mr Vice & Mr. W. Stone accompanied the hymns. The family representatives were Mr. William Holden and Mr. Arthur Holden (sons), Mr. and Mrs E. Burrows (daughter and son in law) and Mr. A. Burrows (grandson). Among the others present were Mrs. Hazell. Mr. R. Gaskin, Mrs. P. Maiden, Mrs R. Shipley, Mr. Oscar Scott, Mrs. F. Stone, Miss Ethel Edwards, Mrs. D. Tooke ,Mr. Alfred Smith. Mr. J. Pearson, Mr. G. Frederick William Holden was born 29 June 1914 at Brasted ,Kent, England. He joined the RAF in 1933 was 516363 AC 2when he went through the Training Depot at Uxbridge, Middlesex, England. He was subsequently posted to Iraq to 55 (Bomber) Squadron, where in October 1937 he went on an inter- command flight. Quote Operations Record Book 55 (Bomber )Squadron, " October. Twelve aircraft led by the Commandin gOfficer left DHIBBAN on the 4th on an Inter-Command Development Flight to ADEN via the PERSIAN GULF, the SUDAN, EGYPT, PALESTINE and TRANSJORDAN, and returned according to itinerary on the 26th." While on that flight he was injured and left in hospital at HELIOPOLIS. To quote Air Commodore (Retired) Guy W. Hayes," The decoration awarded to HOLDEN at HABBANIYA, IRAQ, 8t h August 1938, was for an act of Extreme Bravery in regar dto an incident concerning an aircraft of No. 55 Squadron ,at HELIOPOLIS, EGYPT on October 23, 1937. At the time Holden was a W/T operator, a member of the crew of my aircraft, a Vickers Vicount #K6338, of 55 (Bomber) Squadron, of which I was the pilot, and incidentally Officer Commanding the Squadron. The Squadron was on an Inter-Command Colonial Development Flight, leaving Habbaniya, Iraq on the 4th of October 1937, and landing at Heliopolis, Egypt on 21st October 1937, via various landing grounds around the Arabian Peninsula: Aden; Port Sudan; Khartoom; and Cairo, Egypt. It was customary in those days, prior to landing at a strange location, to fire a cartridge from a very pistol to obtain from the smoke, the direction of the wind, if not otherwise discernable, and I ordered my crew to prepare to fire the pistol. In fact I saw the wind direction from dust blown on the wind and cancelled the firing of the very pistol outright. - Unfortunately, as it later transpired, the very pistol was not unloaded prior to landing at Heliopolis, where we landed the same day after some 2 hours of flying. On October 23 1937, all 12 aircraft were re fueled prior to completing the long distance flight to Habbaniya, Iraq and engines were started in order to make a short "test flight" prior to the initial "Take-off" for the last leg of the flight. It was then that I heared a loud report behind me and realized that by accident the very pistol had discharged inside the aircraft, and that an unfortunate and potentially dangerous inboard fire was likely! I immediately taxied my aircraft clear of all others, and on reaching "open space", Holden in an act of extreme bravery and total disregard of injury to himself, threw the burning signal flair out of th eaircraft using only his bare hands to do so!! It was mos tunfortunate that the very pistol had been left "loaded" ,but no member of the crew can be blamed for that, and i tmost certainly does not detract in any way from the grea tact of bravery and extreme courage displayed by Holden, which undoubtedly prevented a more serious incident.After arranging for Holden to be taken to hospital for treatment to his badly burned hands, I reported the incident to the Station Commander, Heliopolis and strongly recommended that Holden should be awarded a suitable decoration for his extreme act of selfless Gallantry. As the incident occurred in Egypt, it was left to the Station Commander to submit a recommendation to the Air Ministry through the proper channels, leaving me free to complete the "special flight" to Habbaniya. After visiting Holden in hospital and wishin ghim well, the Squadron completed it's task, landing at Habbaniya on 26th October 1937, minus, unfortunately,Holden ,who was a most efficient W/T Operator, and popular membe rof the Squadron, and had on that flight and at all times ,carried out his duties most efficiently and energetically .He was a very worthy member of the squadron."

In about 1940 Frederick William Holden was commissioned a sa Pilot Officer in the RAF, his number was 45096 and he was posted to 61 Squadron at RAF Station Watton. While he was stationed at RAF Rutland, he married Lottie Evelin Grimes (formerly Pritchett) she was divorced from George Edwar dCyrel Grimes, and married Frederick William Holden 1 February 1941. The Operations Record Book for 61 Squadron on 18th April 1941, Reads " Six aircraft of 61 Squadron were detailed for an attack on Cherbourg. One of these aircraft is missing and one crashed near Hingerford, the pilot of which was wounded." General Notes: From Keith Holden:Elizabeth Holden known as Betty, was born 27 July 1913 at Ossett Yorkshire,She became a school teacher and held many teaching positions in and near Beverley, Yorkshire. Her last teaching post was at Longcroft lower school, in Beverley, Yorkshire, where she taught history, English, remedial work and religious education. Mrs. Huzzard trained at Leeds University, an dfirst took up teaching in Hull in 1935. In 1940 she was evacuated with school children to Etton camp, where she taught until being appointed headmistress of Cherry Burton i n1944. In 1943 she married George Huzzard. Mrs. Huzzard stopped teaching in 1946 when her husband George retired from the army, but she later taught privately on Lord Hotham's estate, at Dalton Holme, teaching his children and Lord Rankeillour's grandchildren, who lived there.In 1966 she went back into a state school as headmistress at Etton for a term to close the school down when it amalgamated with Cherry Burton. Mrs. Huzzard then did a few relief teaching jobs in the area, and in January 1968 joined the staff of Longcroft for two weeks. Ten years later, she was still there, to conclude a long and happy career. She said that she taught all ages of school children from 5 to 18, but preferred the age group from 11 to 13. Mrs. Huzzard intends to re-write the history of Cherry Burton, which sh efirst completed 25 years ago. She will now have time to update it. In her spare time Betty has been involved with village life and local history. From December 1944 she has been on the Cherry Burton Show committee, including 25 year sas secretary, until she resigned in 1977. "I have seen every village show in the last 36 years", she said. In 1944 when she moved into the village, she became a councillor, and was still a member in 1979. Mrs. Huzzard was also a lif emember of the Beverley Civic Society, and belonged to th efriends of Beverley Minster. "My hobbies in the past hav ebeen purely the village and local history", she added, " Iused to do a lot of drama also".
