Thomas benefitted from the Will of his grandmother Susannah Woodgate in 1806, as both his parents were dead, I think he must have been brought up by the Woodgates.
Thomas was a church warden in Bredfield for 51 years.
He was a farmer and in 1873 he owned 119 acres of land and paid £20 6s tax. At the PRO there is a reference to T Grimwood concerning the Manor of Bredfield dated 12/12/1860.His mother-in-law, Sarah Lanham aged 72 was in the house at the time of the 1841 census. She was also there at the 1851census, birth place given as Charsfield There was also a grandson Willian Dowsing staying with them in 1851.

The family left Bredfield Place in 1875, after the death of Thomas. It was reported in an article in the local paper in1963, that the Grimwoods had lived in Bredfield Place for several generations, I have yet to verify this. The Bennet family lived there in the 1600s.

Possibly William was the son of Elizabeth Clarke before she married William Grimwood. I have not found a suitable birth and consequently cannot vouch for William belonging to this tree.
The original information came from Stan Cook who himself received it from "several sources" several years ago.
Extracts from a letter to Stan Cook and also Mary McKernon from Geoffrey Roscoe of Maidenhead:
Source (Geoffrey Roscow Maidenhead England). William was a Husbandman (small scale farmer) in Semer until 1836 when times were bad for agriculture and there was no workaround. The Government decided on a scheme to move people from Suffolk and adjacent Counties to the North of England where there was plenty of work in the cotton and wool mills and the coal mines. In September 1936 William and Mary with their six remaining sons and new daughter Mary went first to London then by Pickfords canal boat to Lancashire. A distance of about 250 miles which would take a week to travel. They ended up at Chequerbent under a three year contract to Sir William Hulton, who lived at Hulton Hall and owned all the land, coal mines etc in the area. He also had lots of houses so no doubt they had somewhere to live.
The family arrived in Lancashire classified as "pauper migrants", which meant that they had nothing except their cloths and some bedding, so to have a three year contract of paid work was wonderful. William received 10 shillings per week and the younger sons six shillings, Henry received three shillings and John received two shillings six pence.The pay for the boys went up each year to eventually reached 10 shillings. The first house the family may have lived in was one of the long terrace alongside the main Manchester road. A typical house had two bedrooms upstairsand two living rooms downstairs with a scullery addition and a loo outside. The floors downstairs were flagstone and the walls were made of solid 9 inch brickwork with slate or split stone roofing. The landlord would have been Sir William Hulton who was deemed to be a good employer, a great benefactor and well respected in the county.
In fact the family seem to have prospered, John eventually became the mine manager, his son George, became a mine engineer, and John's two daughters, both became teachers.It appears that all the family remained in Lancashire, with the exception of James the eldest son. James, probably at the end of his three year contract returned to Semer and was living with his grandmother, Elizabeth Grimwood at Semer.

The 30 years in NZ seems to confirm my belief that he and his wife Eliza came to NZ on the "Indian Empire" in 1864 at the same time as Georgiana and Nathaniel Barton, Eliza' schildren by her previous marriage. However the age given differs from that on his cemetery record. The informant was the undertaker, which probably explains the lack of knowledge of Henry's personal details, so the age may not be reliable.

I received your timely letter and cards all right on Christmas morning for which we thank you very much and we're glad to hear you were all well. We are having a longspell of wet bad weather not a bit like Christmas. It's been going on now ever since the middle of August. Some of the farmers told me they were in the ninth week. It means that a great deal of corn is very much damaged. Truly a bad year for them. When I look at your beautiful postcards I can well see the difference in climate. We want some of your sunshine here. The seasons here are so changeable.We heard from [Edmonton, Alberta, ] Canada the other day. Was glad to hear Emmie and Harwood [d Emily and J Harwood Gamble]were quite well but complaining of the cold. What a contrast to your side of the world.
We also hear from [daughter] Jessie [Mrs Ritchie] They and the family were quite well. They are getting quite a family about them. He seems to have got a good business which is a great comfort to us. I suppose you hear from them now and then.Mrs. Grimwood at Woodbridge[ Hannah wife of Thomas G, innkeeper] is still alive in her 83rd year. Is fairly well but of course very feeble. Will persist to live alone of course . We are very anxious about her.I am sorry to tell you A. Steel of Bedfield [note spelling] had a very bad accident. Was feeding a seed thrower. James either went to Lancashire with the family and then returned after his 3 year contract, or he remained behind.Geoffrey Roscow appears to have evidence of the former.James died at work, apparently due to excessive drinking at lunchtime. He then tried to sleep it off and probably fell when descending from a loft. He was found the next morning.
